Creating technology for Rural India
The inspiration for GormalOne brewed enroute our founder Manish’s home in Malad to the tribal farms in Goregaon — where he spent time with farmers and tribals and deeply understood their pain points on a personal level. The farmers were technologically naive and operated on negligibly low profits.
With vast and in-depth knowledge of various agri-businesses gathered over the last 28 years, Manish was and continues to be supremely passionate about tapping the power of technology and artificial intelligence to empower the farmers and other neglected sections of society.
The blend of his urge to empower through technology and his financial acumen as an astute investor led to the creation of GormalOne. The name came to life by creatively fusing the names of two suburbs of Mumbai – Goregaon and Malad.
The larger vision is to ensure higher levels of ROI for the farmer community using innovative tools which are financially viable. GormalOne is relentlessly working on its mission to elevate Indian farmers from the vicious cycle to the virtuous circle.
Manish Jain’s journey began with diverse agricultural projects. Dairy quickly emerged as the standout sector, providing consistent returns and higher farmer revenue. Unlike other agri-products, dairy offered stability and growth, with milk prices remaining relatively steady and 80% of the consumer price going directly to farmers. This period revealed dairy’s unique potential, setting the stage for a transformative mission.
During this phase, Manish diversified into various non-dairy ventures but continually found himself drawn back to dairy. Investments with industry leaders like Hatsun and Hester Biosciences provided invaluable insights. By 2015, the focus had shifted entirely to dairy, recognizing its scalability and sustainability.
Manish’s 20 years of field research highlighted the fragmented nature of the dairy industry. Various elements operated in silos, creating inefficiencies. This period was marked by a vision to unify the entire dairy ecosystem through digital technology, aiming to improve farmer livelihoods and cattle productivity.
GormalOne was established in late 2017 to integrate external technologies into dairy farming. However, it soon became clear that existing technologies couldn’t fully address the industry’s needs. This led to the realization that a custom-built platform was necessary. By February 2020, GormalOne transitioned to developing its in-house technology, leading to the creation of NITARA.
Launched in February 2020, NITARA quickly expanded to over 92,000 cattle, involving diverse stakeholders like farmers, vets, and dairy producers. Extensive testing and user feedback drove continuous improvements. This period solidified NITARA’s role in the dairy industry, enhancing operational efficiency and productivity.
- Discovery of dairy’s unique potential for consistent returns and high farmer revenue.
- Focus shift from non-dairy ventures to dairy, with key investments in industry leaders.
- Identification of the fragmented dairy industry and the vision to unify it through technology.
- Establishment of GormalOne and development of NITARA’s in-house technology.
